When Pain Doesn't Go Away, There May Be Another Explanation
You've rested, stretched, strengthened, had scans, and seen specialists. Perhaps you've tried physiotherapy, massage, chiropractic care, medication, injections, or surgery. Yet the pain keeps returning, or maybe it never really leaves.
If you've been told that "everything looks normal," but you're still living with very real pain, know this:
Your pain is real. And there may be another explanation.
You may be experiencing neuroplastic pain.
What is Neuroplastic Pain?
Pain is one of your body's most important protective systems. Its job is to alert you to potential danger and encourage you to protect yourself while your body heals.
Sometimes, however, the nervous system remains in protection mode long after an injury has healed, or even without a clear injury at all. The brain continues to interpret safe signals as though they are dangerous, creating very real pain even though there is no ongoing tissue damage.
This doesn't mean the pain is "all in your head." It means your brain and nervous system have become highly sensitised, and their protective alarm has become overactive.
Research now shows that our life experiences also shape how our nervous system responds. Chronic stress, unresolved emotions, trauma, adverse childhood experiences, and years of pressure or putting others' needs before our own can all contribute to a nervous system that becomes increasingly vigilant and protective. Over time, these patterns can help keep pain switched on.
The good news is that the nervous system is remarkably adaptable. Just as pain pathways can become learned, they can also be unlearned. With the right approach, it is possible to feel meaningful change.
Could This Be What's Happening for You?
Neuroplastic pain often shares some common features:
Your pain began during or after an injury, illness, stressful period, or significant life event.
Medical tests don't fully explain the persistence or severity of your symptoms.
Your pain changes location, intensity, or pattern from day to day.
Symptoms become worse during times of stress, pressure, or emotional overwhelm.
You've tried multiple treatments but haven't experienced lasting relief.
You have a history of adverse childhood experiences or significant life stress.
You tend to be highly responsible, put pressure on yourself, find it difficult to slow down, or prioritise everyone else's needs before your own.
Having one or more of these experiences doesn't automatically mean your pain is neuroplastic. However, they may offer valuable clues and open the door to a different understanding of why your pain has persisted.
My Approach
Healing isn't about convincing yourself that your pain isn't real. It's about helping your brain and nervous system rediscover a sense of safety.
As a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner®, Yoga Therapist, and Pain Reprocessing Therapy Practitioner, I integrate modern pain neuroscience with nervous system regulation, somatic awareness, movement, and compassionate exploration of the patterns that may be keeping your pain present.
Together, we'll work to:
Understand why your pain has persisted.
Reduce fear and uncertainty around your symptoms.
Support your nervous system to feel safer and more regulated.
Explore the stress, emotions, and life experiences that may be contributing to an ongoing state of protection.
Rebuild confidence in movement and everyday activities.
Help your brain learn that it no longer needs to protect you with pain.
There is no one-size-fits-all approach. Every person's story, nervous system, and healing journey is unique, which is why our work together is tailored to your individual needs.
A Different Way Forward
Your body is not broken.
It has been doing its best to protect you.
Recovery isn't about fighting your body or pushing through pain. It's about understanding why your nervous system has become protective and gently teaching it that it no longer needs to stay on high alert.
As your brain begins to recognise more signals of safety, the protective pain response can gradually settle. This creates space for greater ease, confidence, resilience, and a return to the activities that bring meaning and joy to your life.
If you're ready to understand your pain from a new perspective, I'd be honoured to support you.
